5 pairs of phyllopodes, in females the 1^st pair w/o exopodite, abdomen in females w/o dorsal sealing points but sometimes with horseshoe-like carapax protrusion, males with long antennula, most species w/o nauplius eye, clearly distinct ephippium with one or two latency eggs, planktonic, preferentially in periodic waters
